A HISTORY OF FAMILY FUN
The Silver City Cup has held a long tradition of drawing crowds to the outback community of Broken Hill. Now in its 129th year, it is the longest running horse race in the region.
Established in 1889, the Silver City Cup was originally held weekly with thousands travelling to attend meets. As the region’s mining boom came to end, Broken Hill’s population dwindled to a fraction of its former size, and the cup was transformed into an annual event.
Now a mecca for outback tourism, the renowned ‘Silver City’ attracts race goers from throughout the outback and nearby cities including Mildura.
Competition is known to be fierce, but always in good spirit. The Silver City Cup’s considerable cash prize pool, traditionally encourages a hearty line-up of both country and city racers. A bevy of horses are expected to participate as the nomination date heads towards its close.
Each year, race goers look forward to the unveiling of the new event poster. Traditionally designed by one of the region’s many renowned artists, the event poster aims to encapsulate Broken Hill’s unique culture and heritage. This year, it will feature the colourful and quirky style of Silverton painter, John Dynon.
Fashions of the Field is a popular part of the day, with prizes awarded to the Most Elegant Silver City Lady, the Trendiest Chick and Country Casual Male, as well as Best Dressed Girl and Boy.
Children are also well catered for, with rides and face painting available throughout the day.
