HIGHLIGHTS

‘Noodle’ for opal at White Cliffs
Sleep soundly in the famous Underground Motel
Visit underground opal showrooms
Meet unique outback characters
Travel remote outback roads through spectacular country
Explore the collection of indigenous Panaramitee style rock engravings

TOUR OVERVIEW

Our first destination is the unique “underground society” of White Cliffs, whose residents actually live underground! Experience the eerie lunar landscape and spend the night in the famous Underground Motel. Visit various mines and museums, and why not try your hand ‘noodling’ for opal on the working opal fields. This is also the perfect place to find a special piece of ‘colour’ from one of the underground opal shops – why not take home a memory of your tour that you will be able to wear and treasure forever?

Leaving our underground oasis, we head west on remote red dirt outback roads toward our next destination, learning about the pastoral heritage of the area with opportunities to spot local wildlife such as emus and kangaroos along the way.

Today’s highlight is a visit to a restricted access area, with exceptional examples of Aboriginal rock engravings. Tri State Safaris is one of a handful of tour operators with access to this ancient area. By joining this tour you will become one of the privileged few who will ever experience a visit to this unique rock art site.

Panaramitee style rock art at this site is characterized by motifs pecked into the rock surface with a specially prepared stone tool. Depictions of traditional teachings, dreamtime stories and native birds and animals can be seen extensively throughout the area.

As always, our minimal impact practices mean we take special care when entering into this very special area. Both our Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal guides have a special affinity with indigenous culture, and are eager to share their knowledge with you.

Enjoy a picnic lunch before commencing our return journey through the Barrier Ranges and back into Broken Hill, through more amazing outback scenery. The tour then returns to Broken Hill.

More infomation on our 2 Day Opal Dreaming Tour or any of our other indigenous tours can be found at mutawintji eco tours

PRICE

The two-day/one-night tour includes accommodation and four meals and is available for $760 per person, twin-share, or $840 for solo travellers. A five per cent seniors concession discount is also available.

Those who book the tour can receive a special 10% discount on accommodation at Out of the Ordinary Outback’s three properties in Broken Hill – The Argent Motel, the Tourist Lodge and the new Broken Hill Outback Resort. Nestled just outside Broken Hill, the resort offers king spa apartments overlooking the desert as well as camping and van sites and a restaurant inside a restored, historic pub.

2 DAY WHITE CLIFFS OPAL DREAMING

Includes overnight accommodation in the Underground Motel
Visit the ‘underground’ society of unique mining community White Cliffs – where the residents literally live underground! Renowned for uncovering the world’s only opal ‘pineapple’, the landscape of White Cliffs looks deceptively barren. Take a closer look and you’ll discover a community filled with history and character, right underneath your feet!

1 DAY MUTAWINTJI NATIONAL PARK

Includes access to the restricted access Historic Sites

Mutawintji (pronounced moot-a-wint-ji) National Park, was once a busy meeting place for Australia’s ancient indigenous inhabitants. Their dreamtime stories, history and teachings adorn rocks and caverns, as stencils and engravings, providing a unique insight into the life & culture of the Australian aboriginal people. Mutawintji holds evidence of Aboriginal occupation dating back over 8,000 years.

1 DAY BROKEN HILL / SILVERTON EXPLORER

With a history steeped in mining culture, the outback community of Broken Hill was founded above the silver and zinc-lead ore deposits that lead to the establishment of BHP Billiton. Since then, Broken Hill has become renowned for its extensive artisan community and its long role in Australian history that lead to it becoming country’s first heritage-listed city. Its isolation, sprawling country surrounds and proximity to small historical communities have given it a name as Australia’s ‘Gateway to the Outback’. What better way to start an outback adventure.

1 DAY MENINDEE / KINCHEGA NATIONAL PARK

Includes 1-hour River Lady cruise on Lake Wetherall*

Located on the South-East of outback community Broken Hill, and holding three and a half times as much water as the Sydney Harbour, the Menindee Lake system is renowned for its strikingly beautiful flooded red river gum trees. The water system and abundant native plant species are also known to attract a large variety of native birdlife and native wildlife. Menindee and Kinchega National Park has played a role in pastoral and indigenous culture as well as Australian history as one of the destinations visited by the ill-fated expedition of Burke and Wills first took place

New outback resort poised to open in Broken Hill, with opening specials on accommodation and Mutawintji tour bookings

Outback NSW tourism brand, Out of the Ordinary Outback will open its new $5 million Broken Hill Outback Resort on August 31, 2018.

Hugging a historic but abandoned desert pub brought back to life by Out of the Ordinary Outback, the new cabin, caravan and camping park will have a staged, soft opening. The bar and bistro in the refurbished outback hotel, along with 40 camping and caravan sites, will be open from September 1st, serving cold beer and traditional, home-made pizza. The Coach House fine dining restaurant will open in stage two of the resort this September followed by an additional 40 camping and caravanning sites. Stage three this November will see the opening of 24 king spa cabins, each featuring an open-air deck spa and king-size bed. Stage four – a swimming pool, playground and bush trails through the surrounding dunes – is scheduled for development in 2019.

Surrounded by the rugged Barrier Ranges, 13km east of Broken Hill as a gateway to the outback city, the Broken Hill Outback Resort is designed to help visitors experience the essence of the Australian outback in comfort. The resort surrounds the historic Mt Gipps Hotel, which was built in 1890 and popular with miners, soldiers, artists and travellers before closing in 1987. Out of the Ordinary Outback bought the hotel in 2015 and has completely restored and renovated the neglected heritage building, and has created surrounding landscaping, with the re-inspired pub now housing a bistro, restaurant and the resort’s reception.

The ambitious project has been a labour of love for Out of the Ordinary Outback owner and passionate outback lover, Scott Smith. “I fell in love with this old desert pub when I first saw it,” Mr Smith said. “I had a vision to bring her back to life as the centrepiece of a vibrant but relaxed outback resort and, while it’s certainly been a challenging journey, I am delighted the vision is now turning into reality, with visitors now able to enjoy the ambience of the outback and the charms of the historic hotel just 10 minutes from Broken Hill.”

Opening specials

To mark the opening of the Broken Hill Outback Resort on August 31, campers and caravanners using the powered or unpowered sites and brand new state of the art camp kitchen can book three nights and get a fourth night free. Powered sites are $40 a night.

Bookings are now also open for the resort’s 24 king spa cabins with their indulgent king beds and open-air deck spas so you can soak in the outback scenery. When they open this November, cabins will be $150 a night for one person and $170 for two people.

Until the end of November, 2018, resort guests can also save $50 each on Tri State Safari’s one-day tour of Mutawintji National Park which offers ancient Aboriginal rock engravings, traditional Dreamtime stories told by indigenous custodians and the chance to spot native wildlife in their natural habitat. For resort guests, the tour is available from $180 per adult (a $50 saving), while children under 5 are free.

All resort guests will receive an information pack with a Broken Hill visitor guide, free postcards and discounted day tour to Mutawintji National Park.

Perfect as a base for exploring the Australian outback, Broken Hill offers art galleries, famous festivals and a rich mining history, and the new resort is located close to the Outback Astronomy, where guests can learn more about the extensive canopy of stars above. The resort is also an ideal spot to enjoy the sun rise and set over the rugged plains, dotted with crimson Sturt Desert peas.
